Acute Coronary Syndrome: A Nursing Perspective Series

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, causing approximately 1.5 million heart attacks and 500,000 deaths per year. In addition, over a million patients of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular procedures are discharged each year. Overall, patients recovering from heart disease-related surgeries account for approximately half of the acute care hospital population, including diagnostics and either medical management or invasive interventions such as angioplasty, stent placement, or bypass surgery.

This 4-part series provides a comprehensive view of the care nurses need to provide to individuals with acute coronary syndrome in inpatient and outpatient settings. The patients are then followed during their post-procedure period as well as during cardiac rehabilitation. In addition, there is an emphasis on the need for and value of patient and family education. Animation and real-time video of operative procedures are used to enhance the didactic material.
