Assessment of the Newborn: The Head to Toe Assessment

This program looks at the complete head to toe assessment of the newborn. It begins with a discussion of vital signs and continues with a presentation of issues related to eye care. Weighing and measuring are examined including presentations of "normal" values. As the assessment continues, the trunk, umbilical cord, skin, extremities, genitalia, and anus are discussed. The program concludes with a presentation of issues related to newborn screening such as phenylketonuria (PKU).


After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

1. State the two appropriate methods for taking the temperature of a neonate.
2. State the normal ranges of neonatal vital signs.
3. Give the reason for eye prophylaxis.
4. Discuss routine cord care
5. List the normal ranges for newborn weight, length, head and chest circumference.
6. Describe the proper way to measure the newborn.
7. List the steps in the head to toe external exam.
8. Discuss the process of newborn screening.
