Learning Objective: To help all health care personnel comply with the CDC Guideline on how to properly apply Standard Precautions

Acquiring or transmitting a deadly pathogen is a concern for every healthcare employee. According to the CDC, one of the best ways to prevent infection is to interrupt the pathogen during transmission, and the principle way to do this is to practice Standard Precautions. Standard Precautions assumes that all patients in every healthcare setting are potentially colonized or infected with an organism that can be transmitted to others.

This 10-minute general orientation program will help all healthcare workers understand and apply the basic principles of Standard Precautions, including:

  • Proper hand hygiene
  • Application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Respiratory hygiene/Cough etiquette
  • Cleaning, disinfection or sterilization of patient care equipment, instruments and devices
  • Care of the environment
  • Correct handling of textiles and laundry
  • Safe injection practices
