OVERVIEW:

The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with an explanation of terms that are key to understanding dysrhythmias, as well as important information about each type of dysrhythmia. This information is extremely valuable to the nurse's ability to identify and analyze sinus dysrhythmias when they occur in patients.

OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course, you should be able to:
  1. Define: Dysrhythmia; Bradycardia; Tachycardia; Escape beat; Ectopic beat; Compensatory pause; Non-compensatory pause; Asystole; Re-entry phenomena; Cardioversion; Defibrillation; Supraventricular dysrhythmias.
  2. Interpret a normal sinus rhythm.
  3. For sinus arrhythmia, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, and sinus block: Describe the pathophysiology; List the EKG characteristics; Cite potential causes of the abnormality; State signs and symptoms; Discuss management modalities.
